Annotated Gratitude

Daily I feel grateful to all of the teachers who have been and continue to be a part of my life and growth.  My intention is to write about some of the people and teachings that have positively impacted my life.

Chodron, Pema. Don’t Bite the Hook: Finding Freedom from Anger, Resentment, and Other Destructive Emotions. (audiobook)  Pema discusses“shenpa,” a feeling of being stuck like glue to some ego-produced belief in a way similar to how a fish gets hooked to the end of a fishing pole once it bites the bait. (Bait for me is believing that “I should be angry about this” or “I should be afraid about that.”) Once I bite the hook, I, like a fish, get taken on a ride away from my water, my source of life, my peace. Because of this teaching, I know what it feels like to be hooked (it’s “sticky quality”), and this helps me detach from misguided beliefs. I also can better recognize what my bait looks like so I can avoid biting the hook.
